Mercator placed a cylinder around a globe that touched the earth at the equator. From the projection center in the center of the earth, he then transferred all points from the globe to the cylinder. Then he unrolled the cylinder and got a plane, angular map of the earth. This was a great improvement for navigation. However, the Mercator projection has a significant disadvantage. The maps with Mercator projection are neither true to area nor true to line. Only at the equator the area is exactly reproduced. Towards the north and south poles there are significant biases. The areas located there are shown much larger than they actually are. Greenland has about the same size as Africa on a Mercator projection, but in reality Africa is about 15 times larger than Greenland.
